In 1971, I became a teen, single mom with my first son. Dr. Martin Luther King had been assassinated three years prior, and president John F. Kennedy had been assassinated before that. The tension and riots that followed in many US cities was still going on. Boston was politically and racially polarized between civil rights for working class people of color and opposition from those who disdained racial equality. The heated battles made the daily news and spilled into a turbulent desegregation of public schools via court-ordered busing of school children.
My mom was a foster child, who had eleven children of African American, Italian, Jewish and Puerto Rican heritage. My sisters and brothers ranged from dark skinned with hazel eyes and dark hair, to white skinned with green eyes and red hair. So, I couldn't believe that skin color could cause people to act so violently toward each other.
My primary emotional salvation was through reading books: from poetry and science to encyclopedias, dictionaries and self-help.
I concentrated on raising my family and working any job I could until that period in time was over. However, no matter how hard I worked, or whatever I accomplished, there was scathing judgement directed at me for being a black woman and a young, single mom. These disapprovals both weighed me down and catapulted my goal to succeed. I turned negative attempts to humiliate me into a determination to help people like myself regardless of their circumstances. I used my life difficulties to create a toolbox and a roadmap to overcome punitive and other barriers of class, color and race, etc. prejudice.
Experience has taught me that by mastering reading and verbal, written and mixed-media literacy, individuals can out-think and out-maneuver their detractors, to earn a livable wage as contributing members of society.
Further I believe that each of us can help our families overcome intergenerational poverty and deprivation through education.
With these ideals and many things I learned along the way, I designed Eworkstyle Institute.
